Pritchard Farm
Pritchard Farm is a smaller suburb of East St Paul with a network of parks, lakes and walking paths.
The borders for Pritchard Farm are Henderson Highway, the Perimeter Highway, Lagimodiere, and the Rail Line. It is ideal for families looking for a bit more space. It offers rural living yet is close to most amenities. While the large lots provide privacy, the winding paths all around the neighbourhood help to connect the residents within the area and build a strong sense of community. The community is a 30-minute commute from Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, a 20 minute commute from the Canada Life Centre or Downtown core, and a 35-minute commute from the IG Field/University of Manitoba East Fort Garry Campus.
Real Estate Trends
Construction in this area started in the early 90’s and construction continues within the area. Homes are typically built with attached garages and front-drive access. Most of these houses are backing onto lakes, parks or open green spaces. There are a variety of layouts to choose from such as bungalows, two-storeys and bi-levels.
Schools & Services
Pritchard Farm is within the River East Transcona School Division and there are no schools within the immediate borders of the community.
Students living on the East side of Gateway Road go to Bird’s Hill School from Kindergarten to Grade Five. DR. F.W.L. Hamilton School is an English elementary school accepting students living on the West side of Gateway Road. Middle and high school options will be the same for all young residents of the neighborhood. They follow their studies at Robert Andrews Middle School, and complete their high school years at River East Collegiate.
Children wishing to attend French Immersion Programs will go to Ecole Sun Valley School. They can complete middle years either at Ecole John Henderson Middle School or Ecole Munroe Middle School. Their high school option will be Collège Miles Macdonell Collegiate.
Students living in Pritchard Farm also have the opportunity to attend German or Ukrainian Programs. Princess Margaret School and Donwood School offer German academics from Kindergarten to Grade Five. Children will be placed in one of these schools based on their address. Ukrainian bilingual learning is available at Prince Edward School from Kindergarten to Grade Five. Chief Peguis Middle School provides middle-year bilingual programs in both German and Ukrainian.
Also worth noting, Pritchard Farm is approximately a 20-kilometer drive to St John’s Ravenscourt, a private school offering programming from Kindergarten through to Grade 12. Many households within the area enjoy the private bussing services offered as part of this school’s annual tuition.
Post Secondary Programs
Post-secondary institutions are relatively close to the community, too. The Red River College Exchange District Campus and the Universite de Saint-Boniface are the closest to the area. They are about a 20-minute commute by car. The University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba Bannatyne Campus are about a 25-minute drive away.
Hospitals
There is no hospital within the borders of Pritchard Farm. The closest healthcare facility is Concordia Hospital situated in the Valley Gardens neighbourhood of Winnipeg. Pritchard Farm is only a 15-minute drive from Seven Oaks General Hospital and about a 23-minute commute from the Health Science Centre or St Boniface Hospital.
Shopping
Pritchard Farm is mostly residential and has one smaller grocer within its border. There are still plenty of shopping alternatives to choose from just a stone’s throw away.
Neumann’s Market is a locally owned produce market located on Henderson Highway and serves the neighbourhood with fresh vegetables, fruits and canned goods.
Stepping outside of the community but only few minutes away is Sobeys Birds Hill, situated at the corner of Birds Hill and Hoddinott Road.
East St Paul Farmers’ Market opens in June and offers fresh goods during the summer season.
Looking for variety? A plethora of stores can be found inside the Winnipeg perimeter in North and East Kildonan or along Regent Avenue. Driving on Henderson Highway you can reach McIvor Mall which offers a No Frills, River East Plaza offers a Safeway and Sobeys, Northdale Shopping Centre offers a Freshco. There is also a Real Canadian Superstore at the corner of McLeod Avenue and Gateway Road. Take a 13-minute drive on Lagimodiere Boulevard and you will get to Regent area and all of the shopping that the area has to offer. Kildonan Crossing, Crossroads Station Shopping Centre and Kildonan Place offer a wide variety of big box and specialty stores, restaurants and a variety of services. Major anchor stores include Freshco Regent, Save-on-Foods, Walmart, the Real Canadian Superstore, Best Buy, Michaels, Winners, Marshalls and HomeSense, Home Depot and plenty more. Also in this area are the popular Canadian Tire and Costco.
Entertainment & Recreation
Prichard Farm is a quiet suburb with at least ten manmade lakes and winding pathways connecting the community. The neighbourhood is home to many parks and recreational facilities and it still provides quick access to countless more, too! Mowat Park and Deerledge Park are two smaller parks with a play structure just off the walking path that runs around the lakes. Southlands Park is another great playground to spend an afternoon with your kids. It is situated on Southlands Drive by High Meadow Drive. Sperring Gardens is a larger park with a playground, picnic table and opened field that is often used for soccer.
The Northeast Pioneers Greenway is a 9.5-kilometer asphalt path that starts at Chalmers Park in Winnipeg and runs all the way to the end of Raleigh Street in East St Paul. You will meet walkers, hikers, joggers, runners, roller bladers and families with young children along the trail. Many people use the bike route on Riverton Avenue to connect the path to The Forks National Historic Site and there are murmurings that the greenway will join Birds Hill Provincial Park in the future. We would love to see this come to fruition!
The Baseball & Soccer Complex is operated by the East St Paul Community Centre. It consists of baseball diamonds, soccer fields, bathrooms, picnic tables, a playground and it plays host to many sports practices, games and tournaments.
Benham Soccer fields is another outdoor facility with large fields for soccer and other sports.
If you or your children wish to play soccer during the winter season, A.K. Academy has programs at the Skylight Indoor Soccer facility located in the northeast corner of the neighbourhood.
Additional activities can be found outside of the community, some of them within walking distance or a bike ride away. Others are oftentimes just a short drive from Pritchard Farm. Hyland Provincial Park is a recreational green area on the banks of the Red River. It has plenty of open space, tennis courts, a picnic shelter and a boat launch.
Silver Springs Park is a picturesque gravel trail around the lake at the bottom of an old quarry. This park is great for hiking, bird watching and biking. You would be hard pressed not to see any wildlife while you explore the park as the area is home to many turtles, coyotes, muskrats, beavers, otters, waterfowl, geese and other bird species. There are many picnic tables along the path and a nice hill on Birds Hill Road that is busy with sledding families during the winter season.
If you are leaving Silver Springs Park via Garven Road you will come across a parking lot, which is one of the many access points to Duff Roblin Greenway, which runs along the Red River Floodway and is oftentimes called “Duff’s Ditch”. It offers a great walking, running, hiking, road and mountain biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails. It is worth the visit if you appreciate wildlife and amazing sunrise views.
During the snowy months Springhill Winter Park is great for skiing, tubing and snowboarding. It also offers lessons, a restaurant, and fun events throughout the year.
Looking for some fun program for your family in the area? In the summer and fall, Deer Meadow Farms is a must. It is 13-minute drive from the neighbourhood and has so much to offer: Farmer Day Camps, Sunfest which is a 3 acres Sunflower field with walking trail, a Corn Maze, a Petting Zoo, a large Wild Game Preserve with Fallow Deer viewing, a Bale Pyramid, a Tired Mountain, Farmer Golf, a Farmers Market just to name a few.
If you are an outdoorsy type, you will likely spend a great deal of time at Birds Hill Provincial Park. This park is only a ten-minute drive away and has plenty of activities to choose from, such as hiking, biking, camping, cross country skiing, horseback riding, swimming, beach excursions and so much more. This park is also home to the Winnipeg Folk Festival.
Kilcona Park is great place to have a picnic with your family, enjoy the paths and take in nature. You can challenge your friends on the 18-hole disc golf course, or catch a soccer or baseball game. The park consists of a large off-leash dog park too. Adjoining this park is the Harbourview Park and Recreation Complex. This outdoor facility has everything from a nine-hole golf course, mini-golf, lawn bowling, tennis, beach volleyball, pond skating, tobogganing and cross-country skiing.
There are plenty more challenging fairways for golf enthusiasts. Fungoes Golf Center is a driving range on Wenzel Street. Elmhurst Golf and Country Club is a private, 18-hole golf course for players of all levels. This course also has a clubhouse ideal for weddings and family events. Adjacent to this course is Pine Ridge Golf Club, another private course that consists of a large grass tee driving range, practice bunkers, chipping greens and a putting green. This facility houses a banquet hall, ceremony site and a dining room.
East St Paul Arena and Recreation Complex and Curling Club is located at 266 Hoddinott Road. The arena consists of a newly renovated banquet hall and a kitchen that can be rented for private events. The East St Paul Community Centre currently does not have a physical location but manages many outdoor facilities and programs year-round such as baseball, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, ringette, skating, tournaments and more.
The Beach Volleyball Centre is an indoor sport facility, located on Wenzel Road. It hosts volleyball camps, leagues, tournaments, parties and many types of events throughout the year.
If you looking for a workout facility, Orange Theory Fitness is situated on Henderson Highway, which is incredibly close to the neighbourhood.
