How to Become a Realtor in Manitoba

Realtors in Winnipeg Manitoba - A professional with her paperwork

Beginning a career in real estate is exciting but can also be daunting! It requires careful consideration and preparation. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get started and set yourself up for success as Realtor in Manitoba.

Step 1: Self-Assessment

Before jumping in, take time to assess whether this is the right career for you. Real estate can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with challenges. Write down the pros and cons, research the industry, and understand what it takes to succeed. This will give you a clear idea of what to expect and help you decide if a career in real estate is right for you.

Step 2: Register for Licensing Courses

Once you’ve made the decision, your next step is to register for the licensing courses. You can do this at the Manitoba Real Estate Association (MREA). You’ll be working through four modules, each focusing on different aspects of the real estate profession. These modules are self-study; you have just over a year to complete them (which is plenty of time to work through at your own pace).

Each module includes an exam at the end, and once you complete the exam for module one, you'll be given the materials for module two, and so on. Module 4 involves an in person portion as well as a short online component.

Step 3: Completing Your Licensing Requirements

After you’ve successfully completed all four modules and passed the exams, you’ll need to notify the Manitoba Security Commission that you’ve met the salesperson licensing requirements. You will also need to engage with a brokerage at this time.

It’s recommended to start reaching out to brokerages during module three to explore your options. When interviewing brokerages, pay attention to their fee structure, training, support systems, and whether they offer mentorship programs. Working along side a mentor during your first year is a great way to help set a solid foundation for your years to come. Once you are engaged with a brokerage, you can begin selling!

Step 4: Ongoing Education

Each year you will be required to complete a relicensing course which involves a 3 hour in person component as well as an online portion. All real estate professionals need to complete this relicensing to maintain their licensing status. It is essentially used to keep real estate professionals updated on changes in the industry and industry standards.

Real estate can be a rewarding and challenging career. With the right preparation and support you can build a solid foundation for your years to come.
